Our Story

Chestnut Hill | Our story among nature

Looking up through the forest canopy to a bright sky

A small place that began with intention

Chestnut Hill did not begin as a resort. It grew from a wish to create a place where people could come closer to nature, learn to live together, and find joy in a simpler way of life.

The story began in 1996 (B.E. 2539), when Pook (Mrs Vanerath Sornprasit) of Thung Lung founded Stream Garden Retreat. Inspired by the teachings of Krishnamurti, she set out to make a place in the forest that could welcome people from many places.

It began with a children’s camp in the forest

1996 | Where It All Began

In the early years, Stream Garden Retreat was a camp for children from nearby villages and from the city — a chance for them to live, learn, and meet nature together.

Those first days were not easy. There was no road into the land, and no ready system for drinking water. Still, with the intention to build a place for learning and living with nature, the site grew step by step.

From Stream Garden Retreat to Chestnut Hill

2016 | A New Chapter

Twenty years later, on 30 July 2016 (B.E. 2559), Stream Garden Retreat took the name Chestnut Hill — another important step in the life of this place.

In the same year, Chestnut Hill began operating as a social enterprise under Chestnut Hill Eco Co., Ltd., with a fund to support rural communities in education, social work, and the environment, and to support local administration.

That idea reflects a wish for the resort’s growth to help the community and the land around it.

The founder and her inspiration

Our Founder | Pook

Pook (Mrs Vanerath Sornprasit) started the idea and laid the foundation of this place, believing in learning, a simple life, and the bond between people and nature.

Today she no longer runs the day-to-day work of the resort, though she still divides her time between Chestnut Hill, Bangkok, India, and Europe.

She also founded the Anveekshana Foundation, a non-profit that is not tied to any religion.

Step away from the rush, and come closer to nature

Our Philosophy | A Simpler Way to Stay

At Chestnut Hill we believe a good rest does not need endless amenities. Sometimes time with nature is already a simple, meaningful kind of happiness.

Our rooms have no telephone or television, so guests can leave the noise of daily life and be present with the setting around them.

Among the trees, guests hear birdsong, wind, and the quiet of the forest, and can walk the grounds where signs name trees, birds, and other tropical wildlife found here.

We hope every stay becomes a chance to rest, to learn, and to reunite with nature.

Growing with the community

Our Community | Growing Together

Alongside care for nature, Chestnut Hill values people in the community, and opens work for young people from the area so they can be part of the resort.

We believe good travel is not only a memorable experience for visitors — it should also create value and opportunity for people who live here.

Find quiet in the Chestnut Hill way

A Stay Close to Nature Awaits

Chestnut Hill sits about 30 minutes from Hat Yai city, in a calm natural setting for anyone who wants to leave the rush and spend time alone or with people who matter.

From a small children’s camp in the forest in 1996 to a place to stay today, Chestnut Hill still holds its first intention: a place where people, nature, and community can live together and support one another.

How are we Eco Resort - Chestnut Hill
How are we an Eco resort?

1. We build in harmony with nature. Many of our cottages are built from reused wood or from fallen trees. We leave large tropical trees untouched even though we build next to them.

2. We make our own laundry and dish washing detergent from leftover food such as citric fruits.

3. We buy and use locally produced goods. To support sustainability, a lot of the equipment and utilities we use are handmade.

4. We limit our use of plastic by providing water containers in each guest room; these are refillable at each cottage. We provide refillable soap and shampoo dispensers in all rooms to reduce waste.

5. We conserve about 40 Acres of land, keeping the rain forest in its natural conditions.

6. We utilize water from the stream for bathing; the water is filtered by a pump and is further stored for later use. Through gravitational force, the water can reach the showers at each cottage. Our drinking water is rainwater. Our advanced sand filtration water purification system allows us to collect and purify water for drinking.

7. We have our own organic garden and fruit orchards from which most of our fresh ingredients for cooking are collected.

8. The food provided at our restaurant is 100% homemade. We do not buy ready-made items from the supermarket.

9. We separate fresh and dry waste, using the wet kitchen waste as compost for our garden. We sell recyclable plastic to waste separation companies in the city.

10. We work with villagers in the neighborhood by advertising their fruit orchards and gardens, and on occasion take the guests for visits. This allows visitors to learn about the various ways of local living and gives them a chance to interact with locals on a one on one basis.

11. We provide education for locals. Since 2000, we have been sponsoring local schools around Phatong area. We not only help find teachers and volunteers that are interested in teaching English but we also financially support our Thung Chang Village, the smallest school in Hat Yai.

12. We provide bikes as an ecological form of transportation around the Eco resort.

13. We have recycling bins in each room and kindly ask all guests and staff to recycle plastic bottles and containers.

14. We have installed a linen re-use program so that we limit water waste and energy consumption.
